Honey Bees – Our Precious Cohabitants On This Big Blue Marble

June 11, 2019 by Kyle Bond

In recent years, honey bees have been in the news with headlines describing serious decline and/or potential species extinction. This is alarming since honey bees are responsible for pollinating many of our food crops not to mention the flowers and trees we all love. To potentially lose such an important insect species would be devastating to our ecological well being and would severely effect our worldwide food supplies.

Honey bee colony collapse disorder has been thoroughly researched and many possible causes have been examined. Among the top possible causes are pesticide miss-use, cellular phone tower signals, and parasites including hive beetles and Varroa Mites etc. No one knows for certain exactly what caused of this bizarre population decline.

As with most insect species, we have seen cyclical population increases and decline over time. All of us are familiar with the sudden influx of crickets in the Texas Hill country about every 4 years, or the snub-nose moth invasion we experienced in 2017. Some years we see large populations of Boxelder Bugs in our trees and neighborhoods. Mother Nature is very skilled at responding and adapting to changes in our climate and many insect species are affected by these variables.

The good news for all of us is that the honey bee populations have begun to rebound and are showing signs of a full recovery from the past few years of decline.

Terminix partners with local bee keepers to protect and save honey bee colonies if they are produced inside structures and/or near homes or animals that could be threatened by possible aggressive behavior. Our company policy states that we do not treat flowering plants or fruit producing trees during pollination season, and we always save honey bee colonies whenever possible.

Recently we saved a hive in the attic of a local Kerrville Business building.

Honey Bee hive located in an accessible corner of the attic of a Kerrville business building.

Working with a local bee keepers, we were able to extract and save this honey bee colony and move it to a new location in the city.

The bee keepers salvaged and saved most of the comb and brood (babies) as we removed this colony from the corner of the attic space.
The final product after the colony was removed and transported into frames and bee boxes.

Luckily we have great partners who are happy to jump in whenever possible to help take care of our pollinating friends.

Please call if you’re ever hearing a buzzing sound near your home or business, and we will do everything possible to keep these hard-working and important cohabitants doing what they do best, making delicious honey and our flowers and gardens full of color and fruit!

Are your gutters betraying you?

April 26, 2018 by Kyle Bond

One of the most dreaded chores around any home is the SPRING GUTTER CLEANOUT!

The process of getting up on a ladder with a bucket and gloves to remove the clutter from the past year can be quite dangerous.  If you’re like most of us, you probably procrastinate this chore and hope the rains and wind will just wash all those leaves away each year.

In reality, those leaves and the resulting standing water create a number of hazards to your home and health.  Did you know dirty or improperly installed gutters provide the perfect breeding site for mosquitos that transmit and carry the West Nile, and Zika virus?  Carpenter ants love to build their homes in damp soggy leaf clutter as well and they love the soft rotten wood which results from poorly draining gutters?  Not to mention the damage that results to the fascia and eve boards when the water doesn’t properly drain and runs down the wall of your home instead!!

If you’re like us, we would just prefer our gutters do their job, and usher the water smoothly down and out into the lawn like they are supposed to!

Well we have great news, thanks to the innovative people at DV8 who have developed a gutter filtration product made from recycled water bottles, your gutters can now function properly and worry-free for many many years.

The Latest Generation in Science for Mosquito Control

February 28, 2018 by Kyle Bond

We’ve all heard the news stories about multiple blood-born diseases such as Dengue, Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, and Zika.  These life-threatening diseases are spread by the Aedes aegypti female mosquito and have made their way to the United Stated over the past few years.

At Terminix, protecting public health is one of our primary objectives. In that effort, we are happy to announce a brand new tool to help fight the spread of these dangerous diseases.  With the help of In2Care, a small company based in the Netherlands, we are now able to use the mosquito’s natural breeding habits to eliminate these annoying and potentially dangerous pests from the areas around your home or business.

This innovative new product, uses a special larvicide, and a living spore to contaminate female mosquitoes as they visit this special trap.  Once they visit the trap and lay their eggs, they move on to find other breeding sites and carry the chemical with them thus spreading it to every other site they visit.

The mosquito will slowly die over about 3 to 4 days and will contaminate every other site they visit in the mean time.  This product has been tested in various high-pressure environments and has proven to be extremely successful in eliminating these dangerous pests.

Please view this video to see how this amazing new product works!

Overwintering Pests

December 27, 2017 by Kyle Bond

This time of year, when all of us are gathering with loved ones and enjoying a nice warm fire in the fireplace, it’s easy to assume pests are all out suffering in the frigid outdoors.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.  Though some of mother nature’s creatures do dwindle in numbers during the colder months, others find their way inside your home in a process called “overwintering”.

Squirrels, raccoons, rats, and mice, plus spiders, roaches, crickets, centipedes, and scorpions are among the most common overwintering pests that love to enjoy the warm climate-controlled atmosphere in your home.  Just like you and me, the rest of God’s creature need 3 primary things to survive…food, water, and harborage.  What better place than inside your cozy home where they can find ALL THREE?

It is critically important to keep a consistent pest control application 4 times per year and especially when creatures that typically love the outdoors decide to move inside our homes.

Please remember to contact our office to keep your home and loved ones protected during the chilly months in the Texas Hill Country.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

Hill Country Terminix Merges with Kerrville Pest Control

February 21, 2017 by Kyle Bond

2016 was a banner year for the local Terminix franchise.  Chris Mathews, former owner/operator of Kerrville Pest Control contacted Kyle Bond, owner of the local Terminix company and initiated conversations about merging the two companies.  Chris had been running his operation for nearly 30 years and was ready to pursue some other interests.  Chris considered all his options before contacting the Bond family at Terminix.  He believed our two business models were the best possible fit for his employees and customers and wanted to make sure all his hard work landed in capable hands after passing it on.

“Our management styles were a great fit.  We are both owner/operators, and after asking around the community, I found we both have the same commitment to customer service and providing a happy, stress-free work environment for our staff” said Chris Mathews. “We believe in giving back to our team members and our community” said Kyle Bond – owner/operator of ABC Terminix, “we had great chemistry from the first conversation, and the process of merging the companies went about as smoothly as you could ever ask for”.

Following the merger the Terminix company has grown to serve approximately 3000 customers in the Hill Country and surrounding communities.  We provide the highest level of expertise in the area with two ACE (Associate Certified Entomologist) staff members, and a combined 100+ years of experience, not to mention being a franchise of the largest and oldest pest control companies in the world…Terminix International.

“The first few months of transition have gone very well for the newly merged company, we look forward to getting to know all of our new customers over the coming months” said Kyle Bond.
